Patience is bitter but its fruit is sweet.
There is no doubt that if Jean-Jacques Rousseau had known Fiorentino Aziza he would dedicated to him his reflection. Basically Fiorentino waited only fifty years, nine months and four days – nights included – so that love come back into his life, this time to stay.
And it’s interesting to know how many times we wonder about what love is, and few are those in which we answer waiting. Await is something that nobody do anymore, especially if we wait the comeback of someone who has never been really “ours”. How exactly did Fiorentino manage that? with tenacity? perseverance? spirit of sacrifice? poetry? in fact it isn’t a coincidence that the author in thinking about a so strong lover he has also imagined him as a little ‘poet, confirming the fact that even if he died his poetry survive over time, as is sometimes love is able to do.
However there is no answer that can hold all the feeling that I have perceived in the novel Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
What is certain is that the Fiorentino feeling for Fermina Daza – the most beautiful girl in the Caribbean – is eternal: he has been able to fight in silent hope for her that, after her marriage to the doctor Juvenal Urbino, continued to live as if Fiorentino had not existed. Yet there was a time between them made of an extensive correspondence that already smelled of love, enough to push him to ask her hand in marriage without obtaining the father’s consent.
Hungry you will turn page by page waiting for their return, for a right time and when you will read these words
I knew you’d be too proud to come back, so I decided to come and get you
you’ll be sure that the fruit is finally mature.
